So you’ve decided that a travel friendly, lightweight, compact mobility scooter is something that could make life a little easier for you and like any savvy person these days, you’ve turned to the internet for help and advice.
It’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed, given the vast array of options available to you, and with everyone attempting to pull you in their direction, telling you why their offering is best, you can be forgiven for wanting to give up on the whole idea altogether and just carry on as you are!
At HWB Mobility however, we want to empower you so you are able to make an informed decision about what is the right compact mobility scooter for you. If we happen to have a solution that fits with your needs, great, if we don’t and we are unable to source the right option for you, that’s okay too, we will still do all that we can to assist you and point you in the right direction.
It’s worth having a read of our other blog post about what you need to know about mobility scooters if you want to ensure you cover all bases prior to ordering your lightweight scooter. There might just be something in there that you hadn’t thought of till now!
Giving you the information you are looking for rather than trying to “sell” you something that we supply is our philosophy. What’s more, there’s never any pressure to buy and we won’t hound you with phone calls or emails chasing you for a decision. You are in total control of the process from start to finish. Whether you are familiar with the various types of disability scooters on the market already or you’ve stumbled across this blog during your first search into the world of mobility scooters, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both folding scooters and scooters that dismantle to help you decide which, if any, might be more suited to your needs.

Dismantling scooters, or mobility scooters that disassemble, like the eTravel (pictured above), are wonderful, lightweight, space-saving devices, that make it possible to take them with you in the boot of even the smallest of cars. What’s more, they are the option that you are most likely going to be able to handle yourself when it comes to getting it in and out of the car, enhancing your independence. The scooter with the lightest heaviest part (I think that makes sense) is the Alumina range, just 9.9kg!
Whether you’re planning a holiday, a day trip or just want to visit your favourite spot for a spin, you’ll be able to take it with you wherever you go with relative ease. Because it disassembles, each time you remove a part, it reduces the weight of the main body, making it more manageable when it comes to lifting it in and out of the boot of the car. If all the parts don’t quite fit in the boot too because you’ve got your shopping in there or you drive a Smart Car…because they are able to be separated, it’s possible to put some parts on a seat of the car too.
Disassembling mobility scooters take longer to take apart and put together again which may cause some inconvenience, particularly if you’re exposed to our inclement weather here in Great Britain. Like most things though, the more you practice, the more efficient you will become to the point where it just becomes second nature. Taking something apart and putting it together again could potentially mean that parts could wear quicker than other types but our scooters come with lengthy warranty periods for your complete peace of mind.
Folding scooters are extremely convenient mobility scooters, ready to drive or stow away in seconds. Whether you are considering an electrically folding scooter like the eDrive here, or the manually folding mLite scooter, you will have them ready to roll much quicker than one that you are required to assemble.
They take up less room than their bigger, roadworthy counterparts, making it possible to take them indoors and be stored in a hallway or cupboard without them becoming an obstruction.
Even though folding mobility scooters are ready to drive away and store quicker than one that you have to assemble, the drawback to that is, they are still in one piece, meaning they are considerably heavier. The Connex‘s heaviest part is 17.6kg for example, almost twice as heavy as the Alumia’s heaviest part. Boot hoists could make life easier when it comes to getting your scooter in and out of your car but can be quite an expensive adaptation to your vehicle. Something else to consider is the elev8 – a cost effective solution in comparison to a boot hoist. It will raise and lower to your desired height, making it easier for you to manoeuvre your mobility scooter.

Clearly, we’ve just scratched the surface when it comes to the options available to you but I hope this blog has been useful in some way in helping you choose the right option for you. The reason there are so many options is because we are all unique in our needs and so what appeals to one doesn’t necessarily appeal to another.
